Examples of Semantics: Meaning, Ambiguity, and Contested Boundaries

Overview

A classic example of semantics is the word “bank.” Semantics is the study of meaning in language, and “bank” shows why that study matters: the same word means a financial institution in one sentence and the edge of a river in another. Which meaning applies depends on the surrounding context, and working out how that selection happens is exactly what semantics investigates.

Before going further, one scope note. This article uses “semantics” in the linguistic sense, the study of how words, phrases, and sentences carry meaning. The word also appears in programming and formal logic with related but distinct technical uses; those fields are not covered here. Grammarly defines semantics as the branch of linguistics that studies the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences, and Vocabulary.com adds that it can be applied to entire texts or to single words.

Here is the bank example annotated, so you can see the moving parts rather than just the punchline. According to Helpful Professor, “bank” refers to a financial institution in a financial context and to the water’s edge in a river context.

  • Expression: “I’ll meet you at the bank.”
  • Possible meanings: (1) a financial institution; (2) the land alongside a river.
  • Selecting clue: the context. “I’ll meet you at the bank to sign the loan papers” points to the financial sense; “I’ll meet you at the bank with the fishing rods” points to the riverside sense.

Notice what just happened: the word supplied two candidate meanings, and context selected one. That three-part pattern, possible meanings, sentence structure, and context, is the same analysis method taught later in this article, and it comes directly from an academic framing: A Short Introduction to Semantics states that understanding semantic meaning requires bringing together the context in which a sentence is used, the meanings of the words, and its morphological and syntactic structure.

Examples of semantics at the word, phrase, and sentence levels

Semantic effects show up at every level of language, not just in single ambiguous words. A word can carry multiple senses, a phrase can shift meaning with its setting, and a whole sentence can support two readings even when every individual word is clear. Seeing all three levels side by side helps you recognize that “an example of semantics” is not one kind of thing.

Not every semantic contrast is an ambiguity, though. Some contrasts involve the difference between a word’s standard definition and its emotional coloring. YourDictionary draws this line explicitly: denotation is the standard definition of a word, while connotation deals with the emotion evoked by it. Two words can share a denotation and still feel very different, which is why a writer might choose “thrifty” over “cheap.” When you meet a new example, first ask which kind of contrast it shows: two competing senses (ambiguity), or one sense with a distinct emotional charge (connotation). The two subsections below break ambiguity down further, because it comes in two structurally different varieties.

Lexical and structural ambiguity

Ambiguity has two main sources: a single word, or the way a sentence is built. The Medium explainer on semantics distinguishes them directly: lexical ambiguity occurs when a single word can refer to multiple things, like “bat,” which could mean either an animal or a piece of sports equipment, while structural ambiguity occurs when the structure of a sentence allows for multiple interpretations.

The “bat” case is lexical because you can isolate the problem to one word. Replace “bat” with “baseball bat” or “flying mammal” and the ambiguity disappears; nothing about the sentence’s grammar needed to change.

Structural ambiguity works differently. Take the often-used illustration “I saw the man with the telescope.” Every word here has a stable meaning, yet the sentence supports two readings: I used a telescope to see the man, or I saw a man who was carrying a telescope. The ambiguity lives in how “with the telescope” attaches to the rest of the sentence, either to the seeing or to the man. The ambiguity arises from the sentence’s structure—how “with the telescope” attaches—so it is resolved by making the intended attachment explicit, for example “Using the telescope, I saw the man.”

This gives you a quick diagnostic for any ambiguous expression you meet. Ask: can I remove the ambiguity by replacing one word? If yes, that is a clue the ambiguity may be lexical, though it is not conclusive on its own; what matters is whether the competing readings arise from a word’s multiple senses or from the sentence’s structure. If the confusion only goes away when you rearrange the sentence, it is structural. That single test sorts most classroom examples correctly and tells you where the semantic problem actually sits.

Compositional meaning

Sentence meaning is not a loose pile of word meanings; it is built from them in a specific way. A Short Introduction to Semantics states this as the Principle of Compositionality: the semantic meaning of any unit of language is determined by the semantic meanings of its parts along with the way they are put together.

The clearest way to see this is to hold the vocabulary constant and change only the arrangement. “The dog chased the cat” and “The cat chased the dog” use exactly the same four content words, yet they describe opposite events. Nothing about the individual word meanings changed; only the way the parts were put together changed, and the sentence meaning changed with it.

This principle explains why semantics cannot stop at vocabulary. Knowing every word in a sentence is not the same as knowing what the sentence means, because the arrangement contributes meaning of its own. It also explains why structural ambiguity, discussed above, is a genuinely semantic problem: two possible arrangements produce two possible composed meanings from one string of words. How to analyze a semantics example

You can analyze almost any beginner-level semantics example with a three-part check that mirrors how the academic literature describes semantic meaning. A Short Introduction to Semantics identifies three components that must be brought together: the meanings of the words in the sentence, its morphological and syntactic structure, and the context in which the sentence is used. Turned into a procedure, that gives you:

  1. List the candidate word meanings. For each potentially ambiguous word, write down every sense it could plausibly carry. This step catches lexical ambiguity.
  2. Inspect the arrangement. Check how the words are grammatically combined and whether more than one structure fits the same string. This step catches structural ambiguity and applies the compositionality principle.
  3. Apply the context. Use the surrounding sentences, topic, and situation to eliminate readings that do not fit, and select the one that remains plausible.

Now apply the method to a fresh sentence: “She couldn’t bear the weight.”

Step one, word meanings. “Bear” is the obvious candidate: it can mean to carry or endure, and it also names an animal. That is two senses, so we have potential lexical ambiguity.

Step two, arrangement. The structure is subject, verb, object: “she” performs “bear” on “the weight.” The animal reading fails immediately here, because a noun cannot fill the verb slot in “couldn’t bear.” The grammar has already eliminated one candidate before context even enters.

Step three, context. Within the “endure or carry” sense, is the weight physical or emotional? The sentence alone cannot decide; a preceding sentence like “The grief had been building for months” selects the emotional reading, while “The shelf bracket snapped” selects the physical one. This is normal: sometimes structure resolves the ambiguity, sometimes context has to finish the job, and sometimes an expression stays genuinely ambiguous until more context arrives.

The transferable takeaway is the order of operations. Words give you the candidate meanings, structure filters out the ones the grammar cannot support, and context selects among whatever survives. When you get stuck on an example, the most common mistake is jumping straight to context and guessing; running the word and structure checks first usually shrinks the problem to a manageable choice.

Semantics, syntax, and pragmatics

Semantics is one of three neighboring concerns that beginners often blur together, and telling them apart is the fastest way to sound precise about language. Grammarly draws the first line: while semantics is the study of how words and sentences create meaning, syntax is the set of rules that govern how words are arranged to form grammatically correct sentences. Grammarly describes pragmatics as the study of how words’ meanings are shaped by context, intention, and social rules.

The syntax–semantics split is easiest to see with a sentence that passes one test and fails the other. A Short Introduction to Semantics describes exactly this phenomenon: a sentence can be syntactically good but semantically odd. “The hamburger ate the boy” is a standard illustration. Grammatically, it is flawless: subject, verb, object, all correctly arranged. Semantically, it clashes, because eating requires a subject capable of eating, and a hamburger is an inanimate food item. The grammar checker passes the sentence; the meaning checker does not. That separability is the whole point: syntax and semantics are different filters, and a sentence can clear one while failing the other.

The semantics–pragmatics split is trickier, and it is worth knowing that linguists and philosophers do not all draw it in the same place. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on pragmatics describes one traditional division: logic and semantics deal with properties of types of expressions, while pragmatics deals with utterances, meaning specific intentional acts of speakers at particular times and places. On that view, “what is said” is a boundary, with semantics on the near side and classic pragmatic phenomena on the far side. The academic introduction cited above applies the same logic to reference: speaker-reference, because it varies according to the speaker and context, is outside the domain of semantics and belongs to pragmatics.

But the boundary is genuinely contested. The Stanford Encyclopedia entry on implicature notes that an important conceptual and methodological issue in semantics is how to distinguish senses and entailments from conventional implicatures, and the pragmatics entry observes that some elements of conventional meaning end up contributing to implicatures rather than to what is said, placing parts of conventional meaning within pragmatics rather than semantics. For a beginner, the practical rule is this: if the question is about what an expression conventionally means, call it semantics; if the question is about what a particular speaker was doing or implying on a particular occasion, call it pragmatics; and if a case sits near the border, say so rather than forcing it into one box, because frameworks legitimately disagree there.

Main areas of semantics

Two areas of semantics are safe anchors for a beginner, and everything else is best treated as an overlapping set of labels rather than a fixed taxonomy. The first anchor is lexical semantics, the study of word meaning. Vocabulary.com describes the branch of semantics that studies the meanings and relations of words, and the bank and bat examples earlier in this article are lexical-semantic questions: what senses does this word have, and how do they relate?

The second anchor is compositional semantics, also called formal semantics. A Short Introduction to Semantics states that this subfield is especially concerned with how the Principle of Compositionality applies, that is, how word meanings and structure combine into phrase and sentence meanings. The dog-and-cat word-order example earlier belongs here.

Beyond these two, introductory sources organize the field differently. Some overviews sort semantics by phenomenon (ambiguity, connotation, sense relations), others by method or theoretical commitment, and lists of “types of semantics” published for beginners do not match each other item for item. The sources supplied for this article do not establish a single canonical beginner taxonomy, so this article deliberately does not assert one. If a textbook or article you are reading presents a longer list, treat it as that author’s organizational choice, not a universal standard.

The practical advice: learn lexical and compositional semantics first, because nearly every beginner example falls under one of them, and treat additional labels as maps drawn at different scales rather than competing facts.

What “it’s just semantics” means

In everyday speech, “it’s just semantics” is a dismissal. Skillshare’s explainer notes that people use the phrase to refer to something as trivial or unimportant. Grammarly unpacks the underlying situation: arguing over semantics means focusing on the exact meaning or choice of words in a discussion, often when the overall point is already understood. In other words, the speaker is claiming that the disagreement is about labels, not substance.

Sometimes that claim is fair. If two people agree on every fact and consequence and differ only in preferred phrasing, continuing the argument adds nothing. But the dismissal can also be wrong. YourDictionary makes the point directly: it’s possible the person saying “it’s just semantics” is wrong. When two wordings lead to genuinely different interpretations, obligations, or conclusions, the dispute is not trivial; the word choice is doing real work. A useful test when you hear the phrase: ask whether swapping the disputed wording would change what anyone believes, decides, or does. If yes, the semantics is the substance, not a distraction from it.

Why semantics matters in everyday communication

Semantic awareness pays off first in your own writing and speech. Grammarly puts it plainly: semantics matters in communication because it enables you to express yourself clearly, and when you can pinpoint words’ meanings and choose the best words for your point, you are better equipped to express ideas logically and persuasively. Every ambiguity type covered in this article is also an editing checklist item: an editor who can spot a lexically ambiguous word or a structurally ambiguous phrase can fix it before a reader stumbles on it.

Translation raises the stakes further. Helpful Professor notes that translating from one language to another requires careful consideration of semantics, because certain words may not have an exact translation in the target language. A translator cannot simply swap words; they must identify the sense being used in the source language and find the expression that carries that sense, and where possible its connotation, in the target language.

Semantics also underpins language technology. Grammarly states that natural language processing relies on proper semantics to function: software that handles human language has to resolve the same word-sense and structure questions a human reader does.

The common thread is that meaning is never automatic. Whether you are drafting an email, checking a translation, or explaining an ambiguous headline, the same three checks apply: what could the words mean, what does the structure allow, and what does the context select.
