Choose SEO Software for Agencies by the Work You Need to Deliver

Compare five SEO tools for agency research, audits, tracking and reporting, with dated pricing, capacity limits and a practical buying test.
The right SEO software for agencies depends on what is slowing delivery: research, technical diagnosis, ongoing monitoring or client reporting. Those are different jobs. Buying a larger suite will not necessarily solve a reporting bottleneck, and a branded dashboard will not fix a client’s website.
For a full-service SEO team, start with one research and monitoring platform. Add a specialist only when a client deliverable requires it. For B2B accounts, judge the stack by whether it helps your team identify buyer questions, publish useful pages, resolve technical blockers and connect search performance to qualified enquiries.
Which software fits which agency task?
Prices below were checked on October 25, 2026. Dollar figures are USD; annual-billing equivalents require an annual commitment.

|---|---|---|---|
| SE Ranking | A shared platform for recurring multi-client SEO | Core: $129/month, or $103.20/month billed annually; Agency Pack adds $69/month, annual billing only | Projects, manager seats and client-facing features must fit your roster |
| Semrush | Research-led teams combining SEO and AI-search monitoring | Starter SEO + AI Search: $199/month; Pro+: $299/month | Starter monitors five websites for SEO, but includes one domain for AI brand performance |
| Ahrefs | Competitor, keyword and backlink research | Lite: $129/month; Standard: $249/month | User charges, data allowances and required reporting integrations |

These are workflow-based recommendations, not a claim that one vendor has the most accurate data in every market. Test your clients’ industries and locations before committing.
SE Ranking: evaluate it for repeatable multi-client delivery
SE Ranking combines rank tracking, keyword and competitor research, backlink research, and website audits. Its base Core plan includes 10 projects, one manager seat, 2,000 daily tracked keywords and 250,000 audit pages per month. Growth expands that to 30 projects and three manager seats, among other increases. The separate Agency Pack adds platform and report white labeling, client-facing tools and scheduled reporting. See the current plans and add-ons.
That makes it a practical shortlist candidate for an agency delivering a consistent monthly service across smaller accounts. Build each project around commercially useful topics—such as a software category comparison or a service buyer’s implementation questions—rather than filling the keyword allowance with unrelated terms.
Check before buying: a 10-client roster is not automatically a 10-project requirement. Multiple sites, markets and internal projects can change capacity needs. Confirm project capacity for your chosen base plan and Agency Pack combination, price the manager seats your team needs, and test client access. The Agency Pack requires an annual subscription.
Semrush: evaluate it for broader research and monitoring
Semrush’s Starter SEO + AI Search plan combines keyword research, competitor insights and site auditing with daily tracking of 500 keywords and 50 AI prompts. It includes five monitored websites for SEO but only one domain for AI brand performance. Pro+ raises SEO capacity to 15 monitored websites and 1,500 keywords, while adding historical SEO data, content optimization and multi-location/device tracking. Additional users and branded reporting have separate charges. Semrush’s pricing page specifies those limits and add-ons.
Consider it when strategists need research and ongoing monitoring in the same environment. For a B2B client, the useful output is a prioritized set of buyer questions and competing pages—not simply a long keyword export.
Check before buying: price SEO website capacity and AI brand-monitoring capacity separately against your client roster. For AI monitoring, keep prompts, engines, locations and frequency consistent so comparisons remain interpretable. Treat visibility as a diagnostic measure, not proof of pipeline.
Ahrefs: evaluate it for research-heavy accounts
Ahrefs includes Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker. Standard adds Content Explorer, Batch Analysis and SERP comparison; Advanced includes the Looker Studio integration. Additional users and optional reporting capabilities affect the final cost. Ahrefs lists the feature tiers and usage charges here.
It belongs on the shortlist when your team frequently investigates competing content, referring sites and gaps in buyer-topic coverage. The research still needs editorial judgment: a competitor ranking for a topic does not establish that the topic will attract your client’s ideal buyer.
Check before buying: run the same research brief in each research-platform finalist. Compare useful findings, export usability and time to a defensible recommendation—not just headline database claims. Verify the reporting integration tier you need before assuming the entry plan covers it.
Screaming Frog: evaluate it for technical diagnosis
Screaming Frog SEO Spider checks broken links, redirects, canonicals, robots directives and duplicate content. Advanced capabilities include JavaScript rendering, custom extraction, crawl comparisons and connections to Google Analytics and Search Console. Budget for the paid licence if you need those capabilities: the free version is limited to 500 URLs and has fewer features. The paid version removes that URL limit, although maximum crawl size still depends on available memory and storage. The official feature page explains capabilities and licensing.
Use it when an agency must investigate a specific implementation problem: whether a migration created redirect chains, important pages became non-indexable, or rendered content differs from the initial HTML.
Check before buying: assign someone to interpret findings and someone to implement fixes. An exported issue list is not a completed technical engagement. Add this specialist to an existing suite only if it improves diagnosis or validation enough to justify the overlap.
AgencyAnalytics: evaluate it when reporting is the bottleneck
AgencyAnalytics includes automated reporting, unlimited staff accounts, a white-labeled client portal and more than 85 marketing integrations. Its native Rank Tracker and AI Tracker are optional add-ons. Its pricing page also offers volume pricing for agencies managing 25 or more clients.
This is the clearer candidate when researchers already have suitable tools but account managers spend too much time assembling reports. At the published annual rate, 10 clients cost $200 per month, or $2,400 per year, before add-ons.
Check before buying: connect representative accounts and verify permissions, date ranges, metric definitions and failed-connection handling. Do not add a second reporting platform merely for a nicer PDF. For a deeper branding checklist, compare white-label software options.
Run a delivery test before an annual commitment
Choose representative accounts: a straightforward site, your most technically demanding site and an account with complicated reporting needs. Test each finalist on the job you would buy it to perform:
- Research platforms: produce a short buyer-topic brief with recommended pages.
- Audit tools: identify and validate one technical issue worth fixing.
- Reporting tools: build a client report showing visibility, landing-page engagement and meaningful conversions.
- Across the proposed stack: test exports, staff permissions and any client access you need.
Google Analytics’ organic search traffic report combines landing pages with linked Search Console metrics and Analytics engagement and key-event metrics. That provides a useful first-party baseline for checking corresponding vendor-dashboard metrics—not an expectation that every vendor measure will match. Google documents the report and its compatibility limits.
Record staff time, missing integrations, required upgrades and implementation effort. Calculate total cost as subscription + seats + add-ons + overages + operating time. A reporting tool can display an enquiry event; deciding whether that enquiry became a qualified opportunity still requires your client’s sales process.
If execution is missing, software is not the whole purchase
These products equip a team to perform SEO work. If a business has nobody available to research, write, publish and improve content, a software subscription leaves those responsibilities unfilled.
Searcle offers a different model: a done-for-you service at $3,000 per month, covering business research, branded content creation, publishing to an existing website and ongoing optimization in collaboration with the client’s team. Searcle’s service description outlines that scope. It is not a like-for-like replacement for an agency’s multi-client research or reporting platform.
Choose software when you have delivery owners who need better tools. Consider managed execution when the missing resource is the team doing the work.
